The release of Ministry of Fisheries of New Zealand has urged the recreational fishers to adhere to the fishing rules when they are celebrating (or commiserating) over the course of the Rugby World Cup. MAF Director General Wayne McNee said he encouraged fishers to enjoy the bounty of the sea and to share it with international visitors under strict rules set for that.
He added that fishers should exercise restraint and let others know there are fair size and bag limits that are needed to respect. McNee also said that the recreational scallop season in the Auckland/Kermadec area (including Northland, Bay of Plenty, Waikato and the Kaipara Harbour) is now open. “New Zealand scallops are superb and well worth trying.
Size and bag limits are there for all the species because there are some regional and other variations. So it is better to check the rules of every species. McNee said Fishery Officers and Honorary Fishery Officers would be out and about throughout the Cup helping locals and visitors alike understand the rules. He said that the government people to participate in and enjoy our superb marine environment and fishing, and also to respect it at the same time.
