According to the media report Russia’s federal fishery agency Rosrybolovstvo has declared to take several inspections of foreign fish importers to Russia after the work of the veterinary agency was deemed “unsatisfactory” by experts. The agency said that the decision is a part of government decree issued by Russian ministry of economic development.
The decree is open for public discussion until Jan. 21. Under the draft legislation, Rosrybolovstvo will check facilities located abroad and involved in production, procession, transport and/or storage of fish products supplied to Russia. The agency will also audit the formal system of the third countries’ supervision over these companies.
In October of 2011, however, the Russian government’s commission on the development of the fishing industry deemed that the work of Rosselkhoznadzor was unsatisfactory.
According to the experts the quality of fish products ranks worst in Russian market comparing to other seafood available. Following the meeting, Viktor Zubkov, Rosrybolovstvo’s first deputy prime minister instructed to prepare a proposal on transferring the functions of quality control over fish products imported to Russia from Rosselkhoznadzor to Rosrybolovstvo.
