The controversial introduction of cameras for the Danish nephrops demersal trawl fishery in the Kattegat has been found by a recent evaluation report to be effective for documenting catches and ensuring compliance with the landing obligation.
The decision to introduce electronic monitoring was taken in 2020, with twelve vessels opting to test the system in the project’s initial phace, and the final phase extended to 73 vessels.
Self-registration catches of hake, haddock and cod increased in 2022 and 2023 following the introduction of cameras.
According to the Danish authorities, the overall experience after three years with the project is that electronic monitoring is a well-functioning form of control, especially for documenting catches and compliance with the landing obligation.
