Lewes District Council has secured funding of £12.50 million from the Levelling Up Fund to regenerate the English south coast fishing port of Newhaven.
The regeneration plans aim to establish Newhaven as a maritime centre of excellence and to protect the town’s fishing industry by providing new fish landing stages to accommodate sixteen vessels and building a new centre of excellence for seafood processing.
To reinvigorate the wider local economy, this investment is expected to create a new restaurant and community destination on the West Beach promenade area, which is expected to stimulate the local economy by retaining spending in Newhaven. The expectation is that the fish market and new restaurant will increase footfall in the town centre and attract new visitors to Newhaven.
