In a hectic week, staff at Síldarvinnslan’s Neskaupstaður cold store last week oversaw 5000 tonnes of frozen production shipped to customers overseas.
Two reefers called at Nestakpstaður during the week, the first of which loaded 2600 tonnes over a couple of days, while 2300 tonnes were loaded on board the second reefer in just twelve hours later in the same week. In addition, there is a constant flow of production in refrigerated containers through the port at Reyðarfjörður.
According to cold store manager Stefán Einar Elmarsson, it was high time to ship out production as the 20,000-tonne capacity cold store had been getting pretty full.
‘The second shipment was a total record. Loading 2300 tonnes in twelve hours is unheard of and the fact is that we’ve never put so much on board a single ship in one day,’ he said.
‘The production shipped out this week was mostly herring, although we also dispatched 200 tonnes of mackerel and 80 tonnes of groundfish on the first reefer and 240 tonnes of mackerel on the second. That’s cleared some space in the cold stores for the herring that’s being processed now. It goes without saying that we’re constantly making space for fresh production.’
