Icelandic processor Eskja, based in the east coast port of Eskifjörður, saw a record broken this week when the largest single landing of blue whiting took place.
Faroese pelagic vessel Christian í Grótinum docked in Eskifjörður with 3653 tonnes of blue whiting on board. This is the largest single landing in any Icelandic port, as well as Christian í Grótinum’s largest-volume trip.
According to Eskja, the catch weighed in at precisely 3,652,803kg. It took roughly 24 hours to discharge the full volume to fill the company’s storage tanks.
So far this year Eskja has taken delivery of 28,000 tonnes of blue whiting, of which around half has been landed by Faroese and Norwegian vessels.
Built at Karstensens Skibsværft in 2022, Christian í Grótinum measures 89 metres with a 17 metre breadth, and is one of the largest pelagic vessels operating in the North Atlantic. Christian í Grótinum is fishing with a 2300 Gannet trawl and a balloon codend, both supplied by Vónin.
