The Ministry of Production has set a giant squid (jumbo squid – Dosidicus gigas) quota for this year of 499,683 tonnes.
The quota has been set according to advice from research body IMARPE, and stands to be altered during the season based on biological or environmental factors.
Artisanal fishing vessels, registered with the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organization (SPRFMO) and with a length of no more than fifteen meters, must supply capture date to IMARPE at authorised landing points to ensure accurate monitoring of catches and sustainable use of the resource.
‘These actions not only seek to preserve the resource, but also promote responsible and fair fishing, promoting the economic stability of fishing communities,’ said Minister of Production, Sergio González Guerrero.
‘The established quota responds to a rigorous scientific evaluation and reflects our commitment to the sustainability and conservation of marine resources.’
Squid fishing not only represents a vital source of food and employment for thousands of Peruvians, but also drives the economic development of coastal communities. By establishing a sustainable quota, he stated that the Ministry is ensuring that this resource continues to be a pillar of the local economy, generating income, direct and indirect jobs, and improving the quality of life of fishermen and their families.
‘This joint effort between the government and the fishing community reinforces the country’s commitment to responsible and equitable fishing, guaranteeing a prosperous and sustainable future for all,’ the minister said.
