Ingunn AK docked at Vopnafjördur on Wednesday night with around 600 tonnes caught deep off the east coast of Iceland. The bulk of the catch is herring, plus a small amount of mackerel. According to Ingunn’s skipper Gudlaugur Jónsson, fishing has been patchy after the fleet went back to sea following the August bank holiday break.
‘Lundey NS was the first one back at sea after the bank holiday break. There wasn’t much to be seen that first day, but then a good area was located and there was good fishing there for a couple of days. Then the fishing slowed down and since then we have been searching for marks big enough to shoot the gear on, and when we find one, the fishing can be good. But overall, fishing has been patchy,’ he said and commented that the trip they have just landed took them as much as 200 nautical miles east from Vopnafjördur.
‘We were doing absolutely fine until the wind picked up and after that the bottom dropped right out of the fishing,’ Gudlaugur Jónsson said.
The herring caught recently has been good quality, medium sized fish of around 230 to 240 grammes. Faxi RE is now landing at Vopnafjördur and Lundey is at sea.
