Scotia-Fundy haddock fisheries receive MSC certification

The Scotia-Fundy haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) fisheries in the Atlantic Ocean off the eastern coast of Canada have received Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification following an independent, third-party assessment by an accredited certifier. The assessment was conducted over 14 months in an open, transparent process involving regulators, stakeholders and harvesters. With certification, products from the fishery are eligible to bear the blue MSC ecolabel, which confirms to buyers and consumers that the seafood comes from a sustainable and well-managed fishery.

ST-155 Geir – new longliner with moon pool

ST-155 Geir, LOA 51.3 meters, is a new longliner designed by Skipsteknisk AS and built by Fiskerstrand Verft AS. The new owners, Holmeset AS of Haram, Norway, signed the contract for the longliner back in 2008. This is the fifth longliner ordered by Holmeset AS, with the moon pool system designed and patented by Fiskerstrand Verft AS, SINTEF Fiskeri and Havbruk AS.

UK Lands less Fish But Value Up.

Less fish was landed in the UK last year (2009). But the value was , according to figures from the Marine Management Organisation. The MMO has just published its UK Sea Fisheries Report Statistics for 2009, which also provides the latest scientific assessments of the state of fishing stocks and their sustainability .

Completed Cleopatra 50, Mayra-Lisa N-22, makes first catch

Mayra-Lisa N-22 made its first catch on August 23rd, the day before her official christening in Nieuwport. Icelandic company Trefjar completed the Mayra-Lisa N-22 for new owners, the company Rederij Dezutter. The company is operating from Nieuwpoort in Belgium run by father and son, Marc and Peter Dezutter, who ordered the new vessel from Trefjar after travelling to Iceland. Peter Dezutter is the skipper, and the Mayra-Lisa was named after two of Marc’s Dezutter’s grandchildren.
