Closures could end fishing for Bulgaria
The Black Sea Sunrise fishermen’s association, based in the Black Sea port of Varna, has strongly opposed proposals to close fishing areas to fishing. These proposals are due to the incidence of dolphin mortality, but the fishing sector disputes that fishing activity is to blame.

GSSI recognises Alaska RFM Certification
The Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI) steering board has announced its recognition of the Alaska Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) Certification Program for the scope of Fisheries Certification at the 32nd session of the FAO Committee on Fisheries in Rome.
Thirty years, and still not there
Norway has had a 30-year experience of outlawed discards since the first cod discard ban was put into place in 1987 and Vidar Landmark, Director General at the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture said that the first thing to bear in mind is that a discard ban does not end discards.
Breakthrough on blue whiting trawls
Gerda Maria was the breakthrough to the Norwegian market with a 2016 metre trawl made from Capto for the 2015 blue whiting season, Jógvan S Jacobsen at Vónin’s pelagic division said.
Rush into Landing Obligation
Speaking at last week’s IIFET conference in Aberdeen, Niels Wichmann of the Danish FPO said that there has been a rush to implement the landing obligation, driven partly by fears over cod, and will lead to a a chaotic situation in 2019.
