‘Emotion wins over science’

As a majority of MEPs voted yesterday in Strasbourg for a complete ban on electric fishing gear in Europe. Durk van Tuinen of the Dutch Fishermen’s Association described the result of the vote as a ‘dramatic outcome.’ He and other representatives of the Dutch industry and fishing communities were present as the vote took place.

Abalone thrive on wine waste

A farm trial where abalone are fed recycled grape marc from the wine industry has begun in southern Australia. The South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) has partnered with Port Fairy abalone farm Southern Ocean Mariculture, Aquafeeds Australia and Tarac Technologies following a successful lab trial last year.

Environment lobby applies pressure on pulse fishing

The anti-pulse trawl lobby peaked this week in Brussels with a campaign ahead of the crucial vote on a new regulation for the conservation of fishery resources that will take place on 16 January 2018. Europêche, which represents European fishing associations, believes that this is the umpteenth attempt to demonise an innovative fishing method.
