In news report released on Saturday eight Pacific island countries will ban any form of commercial fishing from pockets of high seas near their Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ). It is said that the ban will effect from this week. The main reason for the closure of these pockets is to control the supply and volume of tuna available to the world market.
It is informed that the move would derive maximum economic benefits for these countries and also an attempt to re-stock tuna population in the pacific. In this joint effort the eight countries that will be closing these pockets of high seas are the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, Palau, FSM, Kiribati, Marshall Islands and Tuvalu. Other measures that will be undertaken soon will also see a limit to the number of licenses issued to commercial fishing vessels and even the trading off of days in the licenses to the highest bidder.
