Sand eel fishing went well and the sprat and Norway pout fishing is well underway.
TripleNine vessels caught approx. 65 per cent of the total Danish catch, but 85,000 tons of the quota were not used.
So says Erik Bonde Nielsen, Chairman of the Board of TripleNine. He finds the sand eel situation satisfactory, as there was evidently enough fish for the remaining Danish fleet.
However, the financial outcome of the sand eel fishing was marred by the very high fuel prices.
We can keep our heads above water
Now in mid September (immediately before 999 NYT’s deadline), the vessels have begun to return with catches of almost equal volumes of sprat and Norway pout.
There is still no cause for celebration, as the purchase price is around DKK 1 per kilo, but the financial situation is better than for sand eel fishing, as fuel prices have in the meantime declined to around DKK 1 per litre.
– That should be enough to enable us all to keep our heads above water, but we hope that fishing will improve later in the autumn, says the Chairman.
The quotas are large enough
A 15 per cent cut of the sprat quota has been heralded, he continues. – However, although we have not been informed of the final Norway pout quota yet, it looks as though the quotas for the rest of the year are sufficiently large for the remaining vessels in the fleet. They are actually larger than we had originally budgeted for.
