Neptune Industries, Inc. has welcomed the recommendations saying that the USDA Panel overseeing organic certification standards stated that fishmeal and fish oil produced from wild fish and other wild aquatic animals, or any portion of the wild fish have failed to qualify as provided in this section, and it cannot be used in organic production of aquatic animals, or certified or labeled as organic.
For Neptune this decision is significant as the company wanted to obtain an organic label for it insect derived protein Ento-Protein. Ernest Papdoyianis, CEO of the company, told that these recommendations strongly support the need for sustainable protein alternatives for fish and shrimp diets. He believes that its recommendations will raise the probability that a true organic standard will be set by the USDA.
He also states that the prices for organic-labeled food tend to carry a substantial premium to non-organic food. According to him it is expected that such a premium would also apply in the organic feed marketplace. He also said that the Ento-Protein product is undergoing final examination and is expected to release to the market later this year.
