An action plan for the octopus fishery using jigs and lures in southern Spain has been implemented, on the basis of the MSC standard.
The Organisation of Artisanal Fisheries Producers (OPP72) two years ago carried out an extensive pre-evaluation process to examine the octopus fishery, and the current action plan is based on the results of the pre-assessment carried out during 2023.
During 2024, a series of improvements was made to collate data on the performance of the Conil fleet fishing for octopus and to analyse the potential impacts of this fishery on other species, habitats and ecosystems.
A workshop held last year analysed the outcomes of the trawl, trap and jig fleets, using data going back to the mid-1990s.
Further efforts are due to be made to obtain a quantitative assessment of the status of the octopus population in the Gulf of Cadiz, a key factor for producers and the authorities in managing the sustainable exploitation of this resource.
