It was in Russia’s northwest region of Murmansk that the coast guards had spotted a Norwegian vessel, Geir, for illegal fishing. The Geir vessel was detained under fishing violations as the vessel was fishing in Russia’s commercial waters without proper notification and is now escorted to the port of Murmansk.
There were 15 crew in the vessel and was failed to report passing a checkpoint on the entry to the Russin commercial zone and started fishing illegally, informed Alexei Astashkin, a spokesman for the region’s Coast Guard service.
The Norwegian vessel was owned by HP Holmeset AS of Vatne, which is going to arrive in Murmansk next week. As Russia and Norway have been involved in long dispute over maritime boundaries in the Barents Sea the fate of Geir is in trouble. If the vessel’s illegal fishing proved then the captain of the ship will be fined.
Last year in November Russia’s Tynda fishing ship was detained by Norway’s coast guard on suspicion of illegal fishing in the Barents Sea but was not proved guilty and released. Now the fate of the Norwegian vessel is in Russian hand.
