Greenland has a share of the capelin quota around Iceland, but part of this goes to the Norwegian fleet.
According to Iceland’s share-out of the capelin quota, Faroese, Norwegian and Greenlandic vessels can catch 73,000 tonnes of capelin inside the Icelandic EEZ, of which the Faroese fleet gets 8650 tonnes while Greenland’s share is 19,000 tonnes. The Norwegian share is approximately 45,000 tonnes, made up of a 13,000 tonne quota plus 31,000 tonnes as part of the deal for the Icelandic fleet’s access to the Barents Sea – the agreement struck twenty years ago over the Loophole.
In addition, Norway has secured an additional 13,000 tonnes of capelin quota that Greenland had exchanged with the EU, providing the Norwegian pelagic fleet with access to the Greenland capelin quota in the Icelandic EEZ.
