According to Congressman Mica this new legislation would put an hold on a proposed ban on Red Snapper fishing in the Atlantic Ocean from North Carolina to Florida. He also suggests that the Secretary of Commerce conduct a study of the population of Red Snapper in the South Atlantic Marine Fishery. He directed to limit the authority of the Secretary to move forward with any rule that prohibits Red Snapper fishing until the study has been reported to Congress.
Rep. Mica added that before we halt fishing, it is important that we secure accurate information on the health and status of the current Red Snapper population. The Obama Administration has placed a hold on Red Snapper fishing in the Atlantic Ocean for no less than 180 days. But people are worried that this ban could cause the loss of numerous jobs.
Rep. Mica opined that both sport and commercial fishing are becoming an endangered activity. This legislation could also prevent more job losses during this time of economic uncertainty. He also told that the effect this ban would have on the local economy would be devastating. Many coastal communities and the state rely heavily on the fishing industry, says Rep. Mica.
