On behalf of the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, MP James Bezan told that the federal government will invest in the repair of the commercial fishing harbour located at Berens River, Manitoba. This federal harbour supports one of Manitoba’s larger commercial fishing communities. James Bezan also informed that this project demonstrates our government’s commitment to maintain a system of safe harbours which enable fish harvesters and communities to make the most of their economic opportunities.
Bezan also added that the completion of this project will be of direct benefit to the fish harvesters and the residents of Berens River. It is told that this project involves the replacement of deteriorated portions of the timber crib wharf. In addition, the work includes a small expansion to accommodate the new transport vessel utilized to get fish to market. The work is to be completed prior to the end of March 2009.
The fund amounted to $400,000 for the project which is being undertaken by Fisheries and Oceans Canada as part of its Small Craft Harbours Program, in cooperation with the Berens River Harbour Authority. Small craft harbours are critical for the commercial fishing industry and communities where commercial fishing is carried out.
