Brand-new Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans Costas Kadis has been given an upbeat welcome to his new role by European fishing industry body Europêche, following his delivery of what is seen as a set of very positive messages following a thorough and insightful hearing at the European Parliament.
‘His commitment to understanding and addressing the many fisheries challenges is encouraging, especially given the extremely difficult situation faced by fishers across Europe,’ said Europêche president Javier Garat.
‘We look forward to working closely with Commissioner Kadis to reverse the situation and to move swiftly from words to action on these critical priorities. His understanding of these issues gives us confidence that he will help secure a strong, competitive future for European fishers.’
He commented that the new Commissioner’s willingness to revise where necessary the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), reduce bureaucratic burdens and reinforce food sovereignty demonstrates a thoughtful approach to strengthening the industry’s resilience and competitiveness.
According to Europêche, his recognition of the need to balance environmental, social, and economic factors, support fleet modernisation, address the increasing competition for maritime space, uphold a level playing field, and protect the European fisheries chain from unfair global competition are seen as highly reassuring.
