GAA Executive Director Wally Stevens expressed complete satisfaction over the agreement which is an important step that paves the way toward closer cooperation between our two global organizations. It is further informed that the two groups will develop a joint checklist approach for a single farm audit that meets the requirements of both organizations.
GLOBALGAP Secretary Kristian Moeller said that the agreement between the two organizations is a way to harmonize existing standards, create robust and accredited programs, and avoid costly and confusing duplication of efforts for producers. She informed that the Global Aquaculture Alliance is a non-profit industry group that has developed aquaculture certification standards for shrimp hatcheries; shrimp, tilapia and channel catfish farms; and processing facilities.
About the GLOBALGAP, it is a private-sector body that sets voluntary standards for the certification of agriculture/aquaculture products around the globe. Like any other recognized standards, GLOBALGAP standards reassure consumers that food is farmed with minimized environmental impacts, limited chemical use and a responsible approach to worker health and safety, as well as animal welfare.
