The fishing industry in Singapore is changing fast as new breed of farmers with a small but growing number of mid—career professionals getting into the business. The government also announced that it will review its existing fish farming policy to ensure stable food supplies in the long term. According to Malcolm Ong, a new breed fish farmer, after having long years in IT industry, owning a fish farm is totally different thing to experience.
Ong, the director of MPG Trading, told that those who love sea and fishing are new becoming fish farmers as it is good idea to spend time here. Ong represents a growing breed of fish farmers in Singapore, educated, unafraid of technology and completely new to the game. He told that he knows of other fish farmers like him, who come from a variety of backgrounds.
As per record there are 104 fish farms in Singapore, and the Agri—Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) is happy to support their growth, providing them with technical advice, health checks, and help in sourcing suitable plots. The Marine Aquaculture Centre also hatches fish fry which are sold to commercial farms in Singapore and the region. After these kinds of support the fish farmers are thinking of expanding their business.
