Netherland suspended culture mussel fishery has blue shell mussel (Mytilus edulis) species. SGS said that it seeks open a dialogue with all organisations or individuals with a direct interest in the fishery. It is also said that anyone wants to contribute their opinion or information to the assessment process may contact the body’s representative. The information should be relevant to the status of the stock, ecosystem interactions or fishery management practices.
The location of the fishery is in the Zeeuwse delta in the North Sea, FAO region 27. The method used in this fishery is catch and grow and fishing by suspended substrate. It is informed that the management system of the fishery, both at EU and national level is subject to law. It observes the legal and cultural rights of fisherman and includes transparent mechanisms for dispute resolution. Fishing plans for seed mussels are written by the PO.
The main commercial market for this fishery is Dutch and Belgium markets through retail and restaurants. SGS told that the full assessment of this fishery is expected to take in the region of 6 months and is scheduled for completion in June 2010.
