Mayor is having daily meetings with the state government officials seeking information no sick fish in the central Queensland area. The State Government has imposed a three-week fishing ban when the report of sick fish started pouring in. Commercial anglers first reported that barramundi and bream have been infected with cloudy eyes and lesions. The closure applies to the area between Deception Creek at the top end of The Narrows, down to Rodds Peninsula and to the outer edge of Facing Island.
According to the councillor Sellers the daily updates are important for the community. She said it is still unknown what is happening. She added that samples have been tested and we are waiting for the results. She also said that people can’t fish, they can’t take any crabs any type of seafood at all from the water – they’re not to handle the fish. She told that there is a need to be kept up to date with the next step and what will that be, how do we fix it, can we solve it, when will the Harbour be open?
Meanwhile, the organisers of a central Queensland fishing competition says anglers have not been deterred by a fishing closure off Gladstone. The Barra Bounty kicked off in the Fitzroy River at Rockhampton this morning, less than a week after the State Government announced it was carrying out tests on diseased fish caught in the Gladstone area. Organiser Bill Sawynock says part of the closure area was originally included in the competition boundary but that has been changed.
