It is high time that every nation should do something to the sources of food that would be available, if not for us, for our future generations in time to come. It is true that this problem has long plagued our era and while we currently leave this worry to a select few in the world, it may become everyone’s worry. There is no denying fact fresh water fish is declining due to the pollution plaguing our national rivers and their tributaries.
In today’s world sustainability is the key word as there is still hope. The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is one such body, located in London that ensures responsible fishery management so that the world population will continue to have sea produce in the coming years. Working on this line a Malaysian company, Golden Fresh is the first in South East Asia that was awarded the MSC chain of custody certification for its efforts in using sustainable seafood produce.
Golden Fresh general manager Saw Lip Teik opined that the company got the chain of custody certification in July 2005 and it is proof that Golden Fresh has ensured that only sustainable seafood sources have been used and this also means that non-certified products have been separated at every stage of its production, from the fishing boats right up to the moment when a product finds itself on a plate.
It is said that Golden Fresh is the first in the region to be granted use of the blue MSC label that identifies environmentally responsible companies that support the meaningful initiative of ensuring sustainable sea harvesting. Golden Fresh COO Saw Hai Earn said with the increased depletion of natural marine resources from the impact of global warming, ocean contamination and over-fishing, the tracebility and sustainability of marine resources as advocated and promoted by the MSC has provided an alternative to consumers.
