Thirteen fire appliances attended a fire on board a trawler in the Port of Lyttleton in New Zealand earlier today. The fire was quickly brought under control. Six of the crew were treated for smoke inhalation and four were taken to hospital.
The trawler has is the Ukrainian-built Desert Rose, which had been bought by Independent Fisheries and has been in refit in Lyttelton at the port’s number 7 wharf for some months. The fire is though to have started during work being carried out on board to prepare the trawler for sea, possibly as a result of a spark from grinding or welding work.
