The FSA’s decision to review the advice on fish will make the consumer to understand the ecological sustainability of different types of fish. According to the Agency the review will be completed by the end of the year, which would be used by many leading supermarkets, including Marks and Spencer, Waitrose and Asda, as a selling point that the fish they sell are only from well-managed stocks.
The Agency also said that its review would also consider the wider environmental impact of fishing and fish farming. But the campaigns provoked a strong backlash from the fishing industry. But the Agency said that the review would still encourage people to eat more fish. The Agency is going to invite industry bodies, environmental, health and consumer groups for their input in the review.
Andy Tait of Greenpeace opined that the current stocks of fish are in crisis around the world and any advice related to fish consumption needs to face up to that reality. According to him the current advice has a real impact on already over-exploited global fisheries and so the review is welcome.
Dr Dieckmann said the review of advice would help restoring the depleting stocks of fishes that are much in demand around the world. It will also help to regulate the commercial fisheries in a great way.
