It is reported that in An Giang, price of pangasius material is trading at 14,000 – 15,000 VND/kg, down 1,000 – 2,000 VND/kg against May. Such a fall in pangasius price during this period is nonsensial, because, although this is the first time pangasius export experienced minus growth, but currently pangasius products are still exporting to many markets (107 countries and territories).
Such situation is not possible when Russian market had resumed import. They have imported 5,000 tons of pangasius in May and other 5,000 tons will continue to be shipped to this market in this June. Besides, other markets also had strong growth in importing pangasius from Vietnam in May such as: America and Egypt with the growth rate of 77.6 percent and 81.6 percent respectively.
Meanwhile, due to the heavy losses during the overproduction crisis last year, this year, a lot of pangasius farming households left their fish ponds idle. Ngo Phuoc Hau, chairman of Fresh Water Fish Committee under VASEP, revealed that pangasius price is decreasing because the buying demand of enterprises decreased strongly. Last year, when the overproduction crisis of pangasius broke out, a lot of enterprises bought material to stock with huge quantity. Until now these batch of material is still in stock with large quantity.
On the other hand, many enterprises believe that such low price trend would not last long. This is the period that water from riverhead of Tien and Hau river started to run down so the quality of fish is not stable and enterprises have to lower their buying price. If the forecast of this person comes true, fish farmers in Mekong Delta will once again suffer heavy loss. Because, while selling price is going down, aqua feed is going up.
