The price of seafood products in Middle region has been down from 30 percent to 40 percent against last year. As a result many fishermen have given up fishing and find other jobs. Fishermen who go fishing squid offshore are people facing the most difficulties at the moment. Last year Tam Giang ward, Nui Thanh district, Quang Nam province had 80 fishing boats catching squid offshore, but until now this number is only half because fishermen gave up their career and sell out their means of fishing.
It is said that last year the price of dried squid was VND 45 – 65 million per ton but this year it was only VND 28 million per ton. Due to heavy losses, fishermen had to sell their fishing boat to pay debt. Fishing boat which was bought some hundreds million VND previously but now can sell with price VND 40 million. The concern authorities have not commented over the strong drop in seafood prices as this time. According to seafood buying agents in Quang Nam and Quang Ngai province, they usually buy seafood then deliver to dealers in Lang Son to resell to China. Recently, consumption of seafood in China decreased so that buying agents decreased their buying volume and buying price.
