Over the past three weeks, Faroese fishing gear manufacturer Vónin has delivered two sets of 12 square metre Tornado pelagic trawl doors for Faroese vessels.
The first set went onboard Jupiter FD-42, which replaced an older set of 15 square metre doors with the new 12 metre Tornados, and the feedback from both of Jupiter’s skippers has been remarkable.
They report that they are using less power to tow the same trawl gear as before, with the Tornado doors maintaining the spread of the gear even at relatively shallow depths of 150 metres with shorter warps than usual.
The second vessel to receive a new set was Nordingur KG-21, which also went down in size from their previous doors.
Still in their first trip with their new doors, the skipper reports that the doors are easy to handle and light to tow.
‘Now we’re waiting to see who’ll be the next one to choose Tornado doors,’ Vónin said.
