A toll-free hotline that was supposed to help ailing lobster fishermen access government assistance turned out to be a sex line – yet another example of Conservative government incompetence, Liberal Fisheries Critic Gerry Byrne said today.
“I don’t think this is the kind ‘stimulus’ lobster fishermen were looking for from their government,” said Mr. Byrne. “I wish it was a laughing matter, but when the fishing industry has been devastated by Conservative neglect, this is hardly the help our fishermen need.”
The 1-888 telephone line was supposed to offer details about the “short-term assistance” program for lobster fishermen recently announced by Fisheries Minister Gail Shea. But the phone number given out by the Conservatives for the Gulf region is actually a sex line offering “tantalizing fun.”
“After spending a good part of this year ignoring the desperate plight of lobster fishermen, is this the best the government could come up with? ” said Mr. Byrne. “We’ve had enough Shea-nanigans from the Conservatives.”
