Committee spokesperson Wanda Atkinson told that they have covered lots of ground but still have issues we would like to address with the Minister. The committee was struck this winter to try and tackle both short and long term issues facing the lobster industry, including the soft market which has deeply impacted local fishermen and businesses.
Atkinson also told that they did stress to the Minister how Shelburne County in particular is effected by the situation and that during such times everyone needs to work together to reach solutions. She also told that the industry, community and government need to arrive at solutions with each of the sectors using what resources they can contribute for the benefit of our coastal communities.
It is informed that the committee members urged Chisholm to continue and broaden his lobby efforts to the federal government for support for the lobster industry. She also told that the minister also suggested that group and individual lobbying efforts to federal MP’s are effective as well. Short-term issues and provincial issues such as workers’ compensation were also discussed. Atkinson said the committee is anxiously waiting for the provincial government to table a budget to see what assistance will be available to help the industry.
