Marine Conservation Zones Reach Significant Waypoint

With the site recommendations by the four English regional MCZ projects due to be published on 7th September, a significant stage in the process has now been completed. A new phase now begins. From the recommendations of the projects, the process now moves to the public bodies, government and the Minister to decide on sites to go forward for designation, accompanying conservation objectives and to consider the management measures required within the zones to meet these objectives.

Fish Prices/Landings For Scotland

With North -Westerly Storm Force 10 gales hitting Scotland at the end of August resulted in a drop at market on the first two days of last week Monday and Tuesday August 29-30 as trawler were forced to head for home ports as the weather worsened.
Large Haddock sold at £114-£171 per 57kg box and Whiting sold at £86-£114 per 57kg box and round whiting sold at £46-£114 per 57kg box at Peterhead Fish Market Scotland’s premier fishing port.

NFFO: Busy Autumn Ahead

The Federation is gearing up for an extremely busy autumn. Although the number of stocks under long term management plans is increasing, theoretically reducing the significance of the December Council, the Commission’s suggestion that all stocks suffering from “data deficiencies” should be subject to a 25% reduction in TAC, ensures that we will have to fight to block this perverse and entirely counterproductive approach.
At the same time, the STECF/ICES report on the EU Cod Management Plan points to the need for serious changes and the first issue to address is what kind of interim arrangements should apply for 2012 given that the present pre-programmed reductions delivers high levels of discards. One of the clear lessons from an analysis of the current Plan is that a tailored approach is required for the Irish Sea.

The Scottish Fishermen’s Federation will tomorrow (31 August) host a visit to Peterhead of the Scottish Parliament Information Centre (SPICE) so as to enhance their understanding of the key issues facing the fishing industry.

Fish Prices /Landings for Scotland

There was firm demand for whitefish landings at Peterhead Fish Market Scotland’s premier fishing port for week beginning August 22.
With demand for the larger selections Haddock sold for £143-£148 per 57kg box, Whiting sold at £86-£125 per 57kg box and Coley made £63-£91 per 57kg box.
There were also landings of herring at Peterhead for the same week.

Herring Fishery in Full Swing.

The herring fishery season is now in full swing as most of the Peterhead and Fraserburgh pelagic fishing fleet left their respective harbours this week to fish the west coast of Scotland and the North sea.

Funding for Fisheries Studies from Scottish Fishermen’s Trust

A Scots fishing charity is once again helping fund the fisheries managers and marine scientists of tomorrow.
The Scottish Fishermen’s Trust is funding three three-year bursaries worth £1000 for students doing the taught and research Masters in Applied Marine and Fisheries Ecology Programme at the University of Aberdeen.

Fisherman Dies after being overcome by fumes.

A 37 year old Scottish fisherman has died after being overcome by fumes aboard a fishing trawler in the North sea.
The fisherman was one of two men flown to Aberdeen from the Peterhead-registered fishing trawler Startlight Rays PD 230.
A Third fisherman was flown to hospital in Lerwick after complaining of feeling unwell, in an operation co-cordinated by Aberdeen coastguard’s.
The trawler was performing standby duties for the oil industry in the Devenick field, 155 miles off Aberdeen..
