Nueva Pescanova Group has strengthened its position in South Africa with the acquisition of Unick Fish, a South African company founded in 2008, dedicated to the import and sale of seafood products in South Africa and Namibia.
An international study has revealed another good reason for choosing hake over beef and many other forms of animal protein: hake has a low environmental impact, according to Johann Augustyn, secretary of the South African Deep-Sea Trawling Industry Association.
The request for authorisation was received in December, and now South Africa’s Department of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) has approved the acquisition of Viking Fishing fishing rights by the Sea Harvest Group for an amount reported to be in excess of 130 million Rand (€8.75 million).
Sea Harvest is transforming its hake factory at Saldanha Bay in South Africa with advanced processing equipment and software. The installation, scheduled to take place in August this year, will entail a major overhaul of the facility with new equipment and software supplied by Marel.

‘It’s not enough to talk about transformation, businesses need to show shareholders, customers and especially government stakeholders that they are transformed,’ said Mary-Lou Harry, human resources director at South African fishing company Sea Harvest.
