The Simek yard’s first newbuild fishing vessel since 2008 has been launched and christened last week. In recent years the yard at Flekkefjord in southern Norway has focused on the oil and gas industry, but with the downturn in that sector, Simek has returned to its roots in fishing.

Norway’s fisheries minister Per Sandberg has announced that the Norwegian quota for Atlanto-Scandian herring has been lifted with a 40,000 tonne increase.

There is another casualty to Norway’s oil industry fleet as Rem Maritime is reported to have sold a PSV to be converted for fishing purposes.

The latest issue of app-based fishing news and technology magazine Hook & Net has been published, containing an extensive review of new Norwegian factory vessel Ramoen.

Researchers have identified only small amounts of juvenile capelin in the Barents Sea, but encouraging volumes of fry with the third largest recorded volume in the region.

New Norwegian factory trawler Ramoen is now in its first trip, having been delivered last month by the Astilleros Armon yard in Spain.

There has been some heavy fishing on herring in Norwegian waters, with 18,000 tonnes reported last week.

Norway’s Institute of Marine Research has recommended that not more than 1500 tonnes of male king crab should be caught in 2017 in the area between North Cape and the Russian border.

The co-operation between design company Naval Consult and shipyard Larsnes Mek Verksted continues with an order from Kristoffersen Fiskebåt for a newbuilding.
