HB Grandi’s pelagic vessel Ingunn AK is steaming to its home port of Akranes with 600 tonnes of capelin on board, taken in two shots on fishing grounds around 30 nautical miles from Akranes. As well as Ingunn, Faxi RE and Álsey VE have been fishing in the same area.

‘Everything is ready. We’re expecting the first delivery of capelin tonight and are just waiting for the ship’s ETA so we can call out staff for tonight’s shift. We expect to have around 30 people working on capelin roe and freezing and will probably be running double shifts, to start with, at least,’ said Gunnar Hermannsson, production manager in charge of capelin roe production at HB Grandi’s factory in Akranes where the question of the day is whether Ingunn AK or Faxi RE will arrive with the season’s first landing of capelin.

HB Grandi’s pelagic vessels returned to fishing pearlside at the beginning of this week after bad weather kept them in port last week. Now that the weather looks to be improving, factory manager Gudmundur Hannesson at HB Grandi’s fishmeal production plant in Akranes is hoping that catches will improve. We are now into the time of year that a year ago gave the best pearlside catches.

HB Grandi took advantage of Christmas holidays and organized a series of training courses for its production staff.
A sophisticated new flow line has been taken into operation at HB Grandi’s Nordurgardur processing plant in Reykjavík. The production line was supplied by Marel and the new equipment and alterations to existing facilities around it represent an ISK 200 million investment.
Two of HB Grandi’s three pelagic vessels, Faxi RE and Ingunn AK, are now alongside at Akranes to discharge catches, while Lundey NS is still on the Grindavík Deeps. According to skipper Arnthór Hjörleifsson, the weather is deteriorating and he expects to set his course for Akranes as well after the final haul of the trip later today.
