Catches of pearlside appear to have improved over the weekend as the fleet shifted to the Skerja Deeps fishing grounds.
‘We followed the edge of the slope all the way and ended up in some very deep water. There was no shortage of pearlside there, but the problem was that it was mixed in with all kinds of feed species, so we couldn’t fish it there on the western grounds. We switched back to the Grindavík Deeps where things are much the same as they were last year. Two trawlers had 100 tonne catches yesterday and it seems we can expect around 50 to 100 tonnes per day,’ said Arnthór Hjörleifsson.
Lundey now has 500 tonnes on board and hopefully this will be added to with the last tow of the trip on board. He said that he expected to be hauling sooner rather than later with wind speeds of 15metres/sec and increasingly heavy seas.
‘We had a perfectly calm sea when we shot away this morning. Now it’s a real mess and doesn’t look like tomorrow will be any better,’ Arnthór Hjörleifsson said.
Ingunn and Faxi, both of which steamed to Akranes last night, have between them landed 1200 to 1300 tonnes of pearlside.
