Scottish Shellfish is fortunate in being able to source high quality mussels all year round from its member farms because of their wide geographical spread from Argyll in the south to Shetland in the north.
Experts believe that it is the best time of the year is traditionally recognised as when mussels come into season and Scottish Shellfish is predicting strong sales over the next few months. It has been a busy year for Scottish Shellfish with sales of mussels up on the previous year despite the difficult economic climate.
Stephen Cameron, managing director, added that the increase in demand down to consumers becoming increasingly adventurous in their tastes and also because mussels represent a quality but value-for-money purchase. He further said that mussels are incredibly versatile in the kitchen and are easy to cook, which appeals to many consumers. People are also attracted by the fact that Scottish mussels are sustainably farmed with virtually no environmental impact.
