The Iranian media reports that the government has deployed Iran’s military forces on board Iranian fishery vessels to counter possible pirate attacks on the high seas. Acting Manager of Iran Fisheries Organization (IFO) Aminollah Taqavi Motlaq said that military forces will be stationed on board fishing vessels during their voyages to high seas.
He informed that IFO’s security guards will cooperate with Iran’s naval forces to protect Iranian ships against piracy in international waters. The government has increased its efforts to fight piracy in the unstable areas of the Gulf of Aden and the Horn of Africa, and secure its commercial vessels through their journeys throughout regional waters.
Recently, Iran’s Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari has voiced Iran’s readiness to protect foreign ships likely to fall victim to pirate attacks in piracy-stricken international waters. He added that Iran’s military forces has almost escorted 1,000 Iranian commercial ships and oil tankers in the Gulf of Aden.
