Peterhead harbour, Europe’s biggest white fish port, will soon get new facelift as Peterhead Port Authority has announced a multi-million pound investment to increase the capacity of the harbour. The authority has planned to turn an unused embankment next to the existing quay into a new facility. It is told that a total investment of £5.25m from the Scottish Government and a European Fisheries Fund (EFF) grant will go towards the £19m fisheries project.
According to the authority the new plan is expected to safeguard 50 jobs and could create more than 100 new jobs. Fisheries Secretary Richard Lochhead informed that this hugely ambitious infrastructure project is exactly what the North East and Scotland needs at this time and it will help secure a bright future for one of its key industries for many decades to come.
Lochhead also expressed that Peterhead is a vital port for Scotland’s fishing fleet and requires significant investment to help our fishermen maximise the potential of North Sea and other stocks. The new plan is expected to reduce the congestions in the harbour which would allow quick landing. John Wallace, chief executive of Peterhead Port Authority, opined that the funds will go right development in the harbour to make it state of the art.
