Andrew Jackson attended the WAS annual conference ,this year held in Busan South Korea from the 19-23 May, where he presented a paper entitled The Role of fishmeal and fish oil in sustainable aquaculture . This paper was presented as the first paper in the session on fishmeal and fish oil replacement chaired by Ian Pike, the former Technical Director of IFFO.
As might be expected all the other papers in the session were recounting various trials seeking to reduce fishmeal and fish oil inclusion levels in diets for different aquaculture species. There is no doubt that the number of trials of this sort has increased in recent years, amidst the rising feed prices and the recurring concerns expressed by many, particularly the NGO’s, on their perceived concerns over the sustainability of fishmeal and fish oil. It was obviously therefore important to try and put this work in the context of the precautionary management measures currently being employed in most feed fisheries and the current availability of fishmeal and its current affordability when compared to other protein sources such as soya.
