A leading supplier of maritime services to the aquaculture sector has placed a significant order for a pair of new hybrid vessels to be built at Vaagland Båtbyggeri.

Abyss operates along the entire Norwegian coast and has one of the country’s largest and most modern fleets, incorporating ROVs, submarines and service vessels. With clear goals for minimising emission, the order is an important milestone in the company’s commitment to sustainability, capacity and quality.
‘With these vessels, we strengthen our position as a future-oriented and environmentally conscious player in the aquaculture industry. It’s not just about vessels, but about delivering safer, more effective and sustainable services to our customers,’ said Abyss CEO Victor Jensen.
The two new vessels are part of the company’s long-term strategy to modernise the fleet and reduce its environmental footprint. The company has set a goal to reduce CO2 emissions by 20% by 2030, and investment in hybrid technology is a central factor in achieving this.
‘We are building a fleet for the future – and we do it with partners who share our vision of quality, innovation and environmental responsibility. These vessels make us even better equipped to meet the needs of our customers and the demands of the future,’ Victor Jensen said.

These 28.90-metre LOA, 12.60-metre breadth vessels have been developed with design company Progreen. Each gets a 1051kWt battery pack and a 140 square metre deck fitted with heavy-duty cranes. Work on constructing the hulls in Poland is scheduled to start next month and these will then be brought to the Vaagland yard for outfitting. Delivery is scheduled for early 2027.
Abyss is gaining increased flexibility and capacity for 24-hour continuous operation – especially important in an industry with increasingly increasing demands for precision, sustainability and reliability.
‘We are delighted to be entrusted to build these vessels for Abyss. It’s a customer with high ambitions and clear demands. With our covered dock and use of local suppliers, we will deliver vessels with high quality and low environmental footprint,’ said Gunnar Arnold Norbø, CEO of Vaagland Båtbyggeri.
Steel cutting will start on schedule in August 2025, with delivery in the first quarter of 2027.
