According to the Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Ministry, Luong Le Phuong FAO agreed to sponsor USD 250,000 for Vietnam seafood industry to eliminate hunger and reduce poverty and to improve competitiveness of Vietnam’s seafood. Le Phuong was speaking at the conference “national action plan for sustainable development of Vietnamese seafood after joining WTO period 2010-2012”, which was held in Can Tho on 8 June.
The information released states that FAO consider Vietnam in the rank of 6th position in the world in seafood export, 5th position in aquaculture and 12th position in seafood exploiting. In 2008, total seafood export turnover reached USD 4.5 billion. Luong le Phuong believes that this was an impressive achievement, but Vietnam’s seafood is still lack of co-ordination.
It is no doubt that Vietnamese seafood industry is going through lean phase due to economic crisis that mars the European and US markets. But even that the Vietnamese seafood companies are optimists to have good business. Commenting on this Phuong said that there should be a successful link and in order to set this link Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters & Processors, fisheries Association must play decisive role in this chain of integration.
