As per the information, Clarence River prawn trawler operators will be holding their breath and cross their fingers for better trawling season that starts from tomorrow. Last year they had disaster season losing much of their hard earn money. Lake Wooloweyah opens for trawling and Professional Fishermen’s Association executive officer John Harrison said the commercial fishing industry was anxious considering that last season was the worst on record.
According to Harrison the early signs of the season were promising. He further said that the signs from pocket net catches this week are encouraging, but the industry is cautious considering the disastrous season that finished earlier this year. he added that the catches in the pocket nets are indicating in general a good sized number one school prawn and this is very encouraging.
It is fact that the self-imposed closures last season may bring a positive outcome for this upcoming season. However, the operators remain hopeful that the sacrifices the industry made last season will reap rewards. Harrison said that they are hopeful that the move to preserve stocks will benefit the trawl season before us now. The prawn season is keenly anticipated by all lovers of fine seafood and particularly those who appreciate regional individuality in quality products.
