The Norwegian fleet has finished one capelin season and another has started, as their quota in Icelandic waters has been fished and the Barents Sea capelin fishery is now in progress.
The Norwegian fleet caught 11,415 tonnes in Icelandic waters in its last week of fishing, ending the season with a modest quota overshoot of 170 tonnes. At the same time, the Barents Sea capelin season is in progress with landings of 21,560 tonnes declared so far, with catches landed for human consumption.
Sildelaget reports that the fish are small, and roe contents range from 14 to 17%.
Fishing for Atlanto-Scandian has slowed down, with only one Norwegian processor accepting landings, although Danish processors are showing an interest.
The heavy fishing has been in blue whiting, with 23,000 tonnes declared over the last week from three fishing areas. The southernmost area is around 50°N, 15-16°W and there is also activity from 52° 30’ to 53° 30’N, 16°W, with both of these zones in international waters, while there have been around 6000 tonnes caught in the EU zone north of the Porcupine Bank.
