Síldarvinnslan’s pelagic vessel Beitir sailed last week to start fishing for Icelandic summer spawning herring off the west of Iceland, and is already heading to Neskaupstaður with 1420 tonnes on board.
Beitir’s skipper Sturla Thórðarson reported that the catch was taken 40-50 nautical miles west of Öndverðarnes in perfect weather.
‘There’s a good amount of herring to be seen in the dark, but not much in the daylight. Most of the catch was taken in four hauls, plus one small haul to finish off,’ he said.
The herring are in the 300-330 gramme size bracket, and feed-free.
‘There’s no sign of any parasites,’ he said and added that he expects to dock in Neskaupstaður late on Tuesday.
‘There’s heavy fishing for the fleet. I like the look of this fishery, and it’s always fun when fishing is good.’
