Samherji’s Vilhelm Thorsteinsson is joining much of the Icelandic pelagic fleet as it heads for fishing grounds south of the Faroe Islands to target migrating blue whiting.
Vilhelm Thorsteinsson EA-11 sailed from Akureyri for the 550 nautical mile steam to the grey zone between the Faroese and UK EEZs.
‘It’s a two-day steam to the fishing grounds. There has been good fishing in the grey zone in recent years at this time of the year and we’re hoping that holds true for this year,’ said skipper Birkir Hreinsson, commenting that he is optimistic and other skippers feel the same way about the coming blue whiting season.
‘The capelin fishery ended in March and that season went well. We’ve had three weeks ashore and next is blue whiting, and after that will be the mackerel. The time ashore was spent fixing a few things on board and getting ready for the season ahead.’
