Edvald Ingi Árnason and Sigurbjörn Björnsson are two HB Grandi’s staff who were awarded by the company in recognition of a rescue they performed on the 8th of February, when they saved two of Löndun ehf’s staff who were in danger of losing their lives in the fishroom of pelagic vessel Ingunn AK.
Two of the staff of Löndun ehf, the company responsible for discharging catches, lost consciousness in Ingunn’s tanks due to a shortage of oxygen while a pearlside catch was being pumped ashore. It is informed that Edvald Ingi Árnason, one of the shift foremen at the HB Grandi fishmeal plant, and ship’s engineer Sigurbjörn Björnsson, were able to retrieve the two men from the fish hold and they both subsequently made a full recovery.
It is told that the rescue could not have taken place any later and the quick reactions of the two men saved the lives of the two casualties. Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson, head of HB Grandi’s pelagic division, said that the company has taken measures to ensure that the same thing cannot happen again. Oxygen meters have been installed on all three pelagic vessels as well as at both pelagic processing plants in Akranes and Vopnafjördur.
