Hon. Cedric Liburd, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, has announced that the Cabinet has approved to build two large 40-foot multi-purpose commercial fishing boats for the fishermen in the twin-island Federation and train local fishermen in the operation of the boats.
During a special meeting on Monday 21 January the Cabinet has given its approval for the construction of the first boat and the contract to build the boat has been given to a local company. The financial assistance to this project has been provided by the Government of the Republic of China on Taiwan and for this the Federal Government has expressed its gratitude. The total cost of the project is estimated nearly EC$ 620,000.
St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party has fromed its government and since then it has built multi-million dollar fisheries complexes in Basseterre and Old Road, which was financed by the Government of Japan. It has provided proper training to the fishermen and even given financial help to these fishermen so that they can upgrade their fishing equipment. Thus the landings of fish and lobster for the local and regional hotel industry have been increased remarkably.
