The fishermen of North Sea will now have to content with another 10 percent cut on the amount of cod, haddock and whiting that can be fished in the North Sea. Fishermen are also facing a further 10 percent cut in the number of days they can spend at sea. Southend fisherman Paul Gilson said it was devastating news. He told that there is so much fish all along the east coast. Even anglers are saying they have never seen so much fish.
Gilson opined that they are backing down to the green groups, but there is no practical reason for it. It’s unbelievable. The idea is just to destroy the fishing industry. It is as simple as that. UK Fisheries Minister, Huw Irranca-Davies, said that the cuts were less than expected. He added that the times are tough for the UK fishing industry. Although we have not secured a perfect-world agreement, we have won these important concessions based on sound arguments to back our position.
Conservative MEP for East of England, Geoffrey Van Orden, reacted angrily to the cuts. He told that he has always maintained the Common Fisheries Policy was bad for our fishing industry, and bad for the fish. Our fishermen are facing even tougher times next year, according to decisions taken in Brussels.
